Here, too, his illusions about the speed with which the “wonder-weapons” could be made ready for deployment, and their likely impact on British war strategy, were shored up by the optimistic prognoses of his advisers.” – Ian Kershaw, “Hitler: 1936-1945 Nemesis” The Heinkel P.1078 (He P.1078) was a single seat interceptor developed for the Luftwaffe by Heinkel aircraft manufacturing company under the Emergency Fighter Program during the last years of the Third Reich. As part of the Emergency Fighter Program (German: Jagernotprogramm), at the beginning of 1945 a programme was launched by the OKL for a new generation of fighter/interceptor aircraft in order to replace the winner of the Volksjager fighter design competition, the He 162A Spatz. The new aircraft was intended to have superior performance in order to deal with high altitude threats such as the B-29 Superfortress, but only had a 30-minute endurance figure. Heinkel produced three different designs of the project which were submitted in February 1945. The high-altitude fighter designs brought forward by other German aircraft makers were the Messerschmitt P.1110, Focke-Wulf Ta 183 Huckebein, Blohm & Voss P 212 and the Junkers EF 128, the official winner of the competition. All of them were based upon a single-seat fighter with polyhedral swept wings. The wings were swept back at 40 degrees and included wood in their construction. All of the projected aircraft had the wing tips angled downwards and all of them would be powered by a single Heinkel HeS 011 turbojet. The P.1078 A was jet-powered interceptor. It was the most conventional-looking of the three designs submitted for it was the only one having a tail. Its armament was two MK 108 cannons, as in the following two variants. P.1078 B was a tailless asymmetric jet-powered interceptor with a short fuselage in which the air intake of the engine was located in the middle between two gondolas. The cockpit was located on the gondola of the left side, while the right side gondola contained the front undercarriage leg and cannon armament. P.1078 C was a tailless interceptor project similar to the P.1078 B but with a single short fuselage. Both the He P.1078 B and P.1078 C had wing tips angled downwards at a more pronounced angle than the P.1078 A. In July 1938, local farmer Arthur Sack entered his AS-1 circular-winged model in the first Reich-Wide Contest for Motorized Flying Models, which was held at Leipzig. The model had poor flight characteristics and had to be hand launched. However, Ernst Udet showed interest in Sack’s design, and encouraged him to continue his research into circular wing aircraft for possible use as an observation or attack aircraft. Sack went on to build four additional models based on the AS-1, with each increasing in size, before building the full-sized prototype as the AS-6 V1. The AS-6 V1 was built in January 1944 by Mitteldeutsche Motorwerke, with final assembly at the Flugplatz-Werkstatt workshop located at the air base in Brandis, Germany. The aircraft was built with the landing gear, cockpit, and pilot seat from a Messerschmitt Bf 109B, and was powered by an Argus As 10C-3 engine from a Messerschmitt Bf 108 Taifun. During taxi tests, it was found that the tail needed extensive modifications in order to handle the 240 hp of the As 10C-3 engine. Five flight attempts were conducted on the Brandis air base’s 1,250 m (4,100 ft) runway, but the aircraft failed to achieve flight. Defects were found in the aircraft’s control surfaces. On its fifth attempt, both brakes failed, resulting in structural damage to the aircraft. The prototype was subsequently repaired and two more flight attempts were made, but once again it would not lift off. Sack blamed the problem of insufficient angle of attack, but Baltabol believed it to be lack of power, and suggested that the AS-6 be fitted with a 2,000 hp Daimler-Benz DB 605 engine from a Bf 109. Sack, convinced it was the angle of attack that was the problem, relocated the landing gear eight inches aft. This, too, was insufficient, and some sources claim that the landing gear was relocated a further 16 inches aft, but this is unlikely. The aircraft was reported to have been fitted with better brakes from a Junkers Ju 88 and have had further modifications to the tail. An additional 70 kg (154 lb) of metal ballast was added. On April 16th, 1944, the modified AS-6 V1 attempted another flight. The aircraft made a brief hop, but yet again it was unable to achieve flight. Another attempt was made with similar results, but during the short hop it was found that the torque from the As 10C-3 caused stability problems. One more attempt was made, but stability problems resulted in one of the landing gear legs collapsing. After this, Baltabol lost interest in the project, telling Sack that his AS-6 was dangerous and to stop flight testing until after wind tunnel testing and necessary modifications could be made. Sack subsequently went back to the drawing board and made further modifications to the aircraft. In the summer of 1944, Jagdgeschwader 400 relocated to Brandis, flying the new Messerschmitt Me 163B Komet. Confident that the new Me 163 pilots were more experienced than the pilots previously available to him, Sack asked for a new test pilot for his modified AS-6. The aircraft, nicknamed Bussard (Buzzard) by the JG 400 pilots, made one final flight attempt, this time with Oberleutnant Franz Roszle at the controls. Once again, the aircraft made only a short hop, resulting in a collapsed landing gear leg. Roszle suggested that Sack send his design to Messerschmitt for proper development, but Sack refused. Nevertheless, Messerschmitt got word of Sack’s aircraft and proposed to build an improved version, the AS-7, as the Me 600. The AS-6 was damaged in a strafing run before Sack had a chance to make further improvements, and the aircraft was likely scrapped soon afterward. By the time US troops arrived at Brandis in April 1945, no traces of the AS-6 were left. The Sack AS-6 is commonly associated with the Nazi UFOs conspiracy theory. Here, too, his illusions about the speed with which the “wonder-weapons” could be made ready for deployment, and their likely impact on British war strategy, were shored up by the optimistic prognoses of his advisers.” – Ian Kershaw, “Hitler: 1936-1945 Nemesis” The Lippisch P.12, P.13a and P.13b were related design projects for a ramjet-powered delta wing interceptor aircraft studied in 1944 by German designer Alexander Lippisch. The P.12 and P.13a were unarmed, relying on reinforced wings to ram its opponent. The P.13a and b were to be powered by powdered coal. The DM-1 was a full-size glider, flown to test the P.12/13a low-speed aerodynamics. The design series were unrelated to the earlier P.13 produced by Messerschmitt’s Lippisch design office. The solid-fuel powered P.13 was one of several distinct Lippisch design studies to be so designated and became identified as the P/13a. It underwent much the same variations of form as the P.12, being presented in a brochure with the large fin and integral raised cockpit, and with an articulated, double-hinged landing skid. The wing trailing edge is angled slightly forwards and the downturned tip surfaces have been discarded. The outer wing sections could be folded upwards for transportation by rail. A variant with a rectangular canard foreplane was wind-tunnel tested. This was not really consistent with ramming and there are other indications that conventional gun armament was being considered. As conventional fuels were in extremely short supply by late 1944, Lippisch proposed that the P.13a be powered by coal. Lippisch soon came to conclude that this might even be more effective than liquid fuel, as the location of combustion was more precisely controllable. Initially, it was proposed to employ a wire-mesh basket holding even-sized granules of brown coal, placed in the lower region of the internal airflow. The burning coal gave off carbon monoxide (CO) gas which was mixed and combusted with the upper air flow downstream. The arrangement proved inefficient. To replace it a spinning circular basket was developed, revolving on a vertical axis at 60 rpm. The hot exhaust would be mixed with cooler bypass air to improve thermodynamic efficiency, before being expelled through the rear nozzle. Other fuels considered promising, due to their ability to generate flammable vapors, included bituminous coal, or pine wood heat-soaked in oil or paraffin. The P.13a had reached a stage where full-scale aerodynamic trials would be possible. A glider with the same general design and 6.7 metres (22 ft 0 in) wingspan, but with the intake and exhaust faired in, was built as the DM-1. Lippisch however took little interest; having moved on from the design, he set up the glider project only to keep students of Darmstadt and Munich Universities from being drafted into a by-then hopeless war. The DM-1 had not been finished when it was captured by American forces. The Americans ordered Lippisch’s team to complete the glider, and it was then shipped to the United States where it was test-flown. According to the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics the results were positive and lessons learned were incorporated into NASA’s research aircraft of the 1950s and on.
