The Kawasaki Ki-84 Hayate (疾風, “Gale” or “Hurricane”) was the most advanced and capable Japanese Army Air Force (JAAF) fighter to see large-scale operational service during World War II. Designed by Takeo Doi, it was intended to combine the maneuverability of earlier Japanese fighters with the speed, armor, and firepower needed to match late-war Allied fighters.

They began receiving Mustangs in July 1944 and were primarily based in Italy, flying long-range bomber escort missions deep into enemy territory. One of their pilots, 2nd Lieutenant Walter P. Manning, was shot down near Linz, Austria, in his P-51B in April 1945 and was subsequently lynched by Nazi officials, a tragic reminder of the dual battles they fought.
